Software I use, gadgets I love, and other things I recommend.

I get asked a lot about the things I use to build software, stay productive, or buy to fool myself into thinking I’m being productive when I’m really just procrastinating. Here’s a big list of all of my favorite stuff.

Workstation

  • 16” MacBook Pro, M1 Max, 64GB RAM (2021)

I was using an Intel-based 16” MacBook Pro prior to this and the difference is night and day.

  • LG 32-Inch 4k Monitor

It is an older model, but still gets the job done. The size was a game changer for me and allowed me to move back to a single display for distraction reasons.

  • ZSA's Moonlander Mark 1 Keyboard

I had gotten a few WASD mechanical keyboards and then went for then Moonlander as my first split keyboard. It has helped save my wrists and hands, as I have some residual damage from a car accident.

  • Razer Naga Mouse

I try not to use my mouse as much as possible for work, so this is just an old gaming mouse I had laying around.

  • Herman Miller Aeron Chair

If I’m going to slouch in the worst ergonomic position imaginable all day, I might as well do it in an expensive chair.

Development tools

  • Sublime Text 4

I don’t care if it’s missing all of the fancy IDE features everyone else relies on, Sublime Text is still the best text editor ever made.

  • Alacritty

I am a sucker for anything built with Rust. Being that I use vim as my editor my terminal is a special place. Also I will take a TUI over a GUI any day.

  • TablePlus

Great software for working with databases. Has saved me from building about a thousand admin interfaces for my various projects over the years.

Design

  • Figma

We started using Figma as just a design tool but now it’s become our virtual whiteboard for the entire company. Never would have expected the collaboration features to be the real hook.

Productivity

  • Raycast

A Mac spotlight replacement that is programmable and customizable. Can have it do anything from instantly play a song stuck in your head in spotify, to generate better copy with the AI it has.

  • Dijo

A TUI based habit tracker that looks great, is easy to use, and can even be setup to automatically track habits if applicable.

  • Linear

By far the best planning application I have ever seen or used. It is also one of if not the best appication I have ever used.
